Greetings,
A year has passed since KISO was launched with the goal of improving the self-governance system of Internet-based companies.
Throughout this past year, KISO has led a variety of activities. Some of these include planning policies with a policy committee, reviewing online postings, and managing reported cases. All of these initiatives supports and strengthens the power of self-governance of member firms. Moreover, we have held a seminar to discuss more effective and reasonable ways to self-regulate online communication. We have also published KISO journals to share the current conditions of Internet management with member companies and to prevent the flow of illegal and harmful information.
With these efforts, KISO has drawn a lot of attention in the field of Internet security, gaining credibility in those who share common concerns regarding Internet use. KISO will be focused on taking on further constructive roles to carry out our mission. Based on our achievements and experiences, KISO is drawing on its capabilities and setting further goals in the following ways:
First, KISO plans to provide each member firm with unified principles and grounds, so that the existing policies and regulations can be carried out more systematically. We have revised KISO’s operation manuals and also arranged concrete, detailed regulations on online postings. Our policy committee, comprised of a group of experts in various fields, will provide clear standards to help any individual company manage postings, which are hard to handle with its own internal policy.
Second, we plan to expand the scope of KISO by opening its membership, not only to web portal companies, but also to more businesses. This will foster and encourage companies to securely operate their online services, while maintaining the balance between freedom of expression and protection of Internet users from illegal and harmful information. Furthermore, through consistent interaction with international organizations in the common field, we will make a great effort to introduce better regulation principles that will satisfy both global standards and domestic conditions.
Third, we will build a cooperative relationship with the government so that the industry’s internal self-governance system managed by KISO compliments the current regulations of the government. We expect the policies and terms suggested by KISO to work as necessary devices in areas where the law cannot be applied retroactively.
In the wake of the increase of WI-FI use, the Internet has penetrated all aspects of our everyday lives; we experience no barriers of time and space. The concern is that the technological environment is changing so fast that all the negative side effects of internet use cannot be resolved simply with law alone. Even worse, there are new types of drawbacks to online communication. Therefore, responsibility lies upon the online service providers themselves to prepare measures that resolve such issues in the most effective way. Given the properties of the internet, self-monitoring seems to be the most appropriate measure.
KISO will be your faithful partner. We will assist online service providers to enable users to take advantage of the Internet in safe environments. KISO will also establish a prominent culture in the cyber world, in anticipation of the growth of the Internet as an essential part of national business.
We look forward to your continued interest and support. Thank you.
